Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, is under fire after the Shelby County health department approved a permit for 15 methane gas generators at its Memphis datacenter — despite outcry from residents, environmental groups, and civil rights advocates. The site, located in a historically Black neighborhood already burdened by Pollution, has been operating as many as 35 generators without a permit, according to photographs and reports.

As The Guardian reported, Memphis residents have been raising concerns for months. “Our local leaders are entrusted with protecting us from corporations violating our right to clean air,” said KeShaun Pearson of Memphis Community Against Pollution. “But we are witnessing their failure.”

Despite xAI claiming that its generators are equipped with “state-of-the-art emissions control technology,” environmental advocates disagree. The Southern Environmental Law Center warns the turbines could emit thousands of tons of nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde — dangerous chemicals linked to respiratory disease and cancer.

This isn’t just an environmental issue — it’s a justice issue. The affected communities in South Memphis already experience higher asthma rates, lower life expectancy, and a cancer risk four times the national average. The NAACP has now filed a lawsuit alleging xAI’s actions violate the Clean Air Act and perpetuate environmental racism.

“Granting this permit ignores the community pushback,” said Abre’ Conner, Environmental justice director at the NAACP. “We remain committed to holding xAI and the health department accountable.”

It’s time to stop letting big tech bypass environmental safeguards in vulnerable communities. We must stand up for clean air, racial justice, and corporate accountability. If you care about climate justice and human health, Support the fight against corporate polluters now.
