Mosha the elephant was born into the logging industry in Myanmar. When she was only seven months old, this young elephant stepped on a landmine while trailing behind her mother and was seriously injured. Luckily, one of her caretakers rushed her to a local elephant hospital, MaeYao National Reserve, run by Soraida Salwala. Salwala was able to save Mosha’s life, but the elephant’s front right leg needed to be amputated.
As you might imagine, balancing on three legs can be a difficult task for an animal that can weigh up to 15,000 pounds! Taking this into account, Salwala and her team outfitted Mosha with a prosthetic leg.
Mosha is now nine years old and in need of a new prosthetic leg to match her size. In this video, Mosha is presented with her new leg. Once it is secure, her face lights up with happiness and she immediately celebrates with a nice dust bath.
A big thank you to all the people who have helped keep a smile on this rescued elephant’s face for so many years! To learn more about Mosha, like her Facebook page, here.
