A beautiful shot of a star movement caused by Earth's rotation with long exposure

If today feels like it’s flying by, you’re not wrong—Earth is literally spinning faster. According to Yahoo News reporter Kate Murphy, our planet is picking up speed for three days this summer, starting July 9. But don’t expect to feel it—each day will be shorter by just over a millisecond, a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it change.

These shifts aren’t totally unusual. Earth’s rotation isn’t perfectly fixed—it can gain or lose milliseconds due to gravitational pulls, seismic activity, and even ocean currents. As explained by TimeandDate.com, when the moon drifts far north or south of Earth’s equator, it can subtly accelerate our planet’s spin. Events like the 2011 earthquake in Japan even shortened the day by 1.8 microseconds.

This year, scientists predict that Earth will spin fastest on July 9 (1.30 milliseconds shorter), July 22 (1.38 ms), and August 5 (1.51 ms). It won’t disrupt your sleep cycle or phone calendar, but it’s a reminder of how dynamic and delicate our planet really is.

Interestingly, Earth didn’t always have 24-hour days. During the Jurassic period, days were about an hour shorter. And in 200 million years, scientists estimate we’ll have 25-hour days. That may sound far off, but it shows how tiny shifts now add up in the long run.

As our climate, geology, and moon continue to influence the rhythm of Earth, let’s not forget the one thing we can control—our impact. The natural balance of our planet is constantly in motion, and our actions—especially around emissions, deforestation, and animal agriculture—tip those scales further.

Let this tiny change be a big reminder: our planet is alive, and we must treat it with respect. Go vegan, reduce waste, and Support climate justice today.
