It is a strange idea, but also a humbling one. Humans have reshaped the Earth so deeply that it can feel impossible to imagine a future without us. Still, history shows that no species stays on top forever. Life changes, the environment shifts, and nature keeps moving.
Oxford professor Tim Coulson believes one surprising contender could rise if humans disappeared: the octopus. That may sound wild at first. Even so, the case is not as random as it seems.
Octopuses already show remarkable intelligence. They solve problems, open jars, use tools, and communicate through flashes of color. They also have an unusual nervous system that helps them react quickly in an unpredictable world. In other words, they already carry traits that could Support more complexity over time.
Coulson’s argument is not that octopuses are destined to replace us. Instead, he is pointing out that evolution does not follow a neat script. Random mutations, mass extinction events, and sudden changes in ecosystems can send life in directions that once seemed impossible. So while primates may seem like the obvious successors, they may also be too dependent on social structures that break down under pressure.
Meanwhile, octopuses are adaptable, curious, and deeply tied to the ocean, which could become even more central to life on this planet in the distant future. They are not likely to walk onto land anytime soon, but evolution works slowly and often surprises us.
This thought experiment also says something important about us. Humans are not separate from wildlife or the rest of the living world. We are one species among many, and our power is not permanent. That is why protecting animals, respecting the ocean, and choosing a more plant based way of living matters right now.
Let this be one more reason to live a little more gently on the Earth.
