Anyone who has battled nausea on a long drive knows how miserable motion sickness can be. Now, new research suggests a simple remedy might be as close as your playlist. According to Good News Network, scientists in China found that cheerful and soft music significantly reduced symptoms of car sickness in study participants.
The team at Southwest University tested 30 volunteers using a driving simulator designed to trigger motion sickness. Participants wore EEG caps to track brain activity, then listened to different types of music while recovering. The results were striking: joyful music alleviated carsickness by 57%, soft music by 56%, and even passionate music reduced discomfort by nearly half. By contrast, sad music actually made people feel slightly worse than doing nothing at all.
Motion sickness happens when the body’s senses send conflicting messages to the brain, often during travel. Traditional medications can help but frequently cause drowsiness or other side effects. That’s why Dr. Qizong Yue, the study’s lead author, says music offers a promising alternative: it’s non-invasive, low-cost, and easy to personalize.
Researchers believe cheerful tunes may distract the brain by activating its reward systems, while gentle music helps by lowering stress and tension. Both approaches reduce the physical response that intensifies nausea, headaches, and cold sweats.
Although the study sample was small, the findings suggest music could provide relief not only in cars but also on planes or boats. The researchers plan further trials to see if the benefits extend to other types of motion-related sickness and how individual musical preferences might shape results.
For now, keeping a playlist of uplifting or calming songs might be a travel essential—especially for families with kids prone to getting carsick. Sometimes, a little melody may be just what the body needs to find its balance again.
