A few years ago, a Cape Town dentist would lose patients when the power cut out. No electricity meant no X rays and no treatment. Now he runs his practice on sunlight and batteries. According to Somini Sengupta at The New York Times, that story is spreading fast across South Africa and beyond.
Chinese made panels and batteries have fallen so much in price that homes and businesses are buying them in huge numbers. Factories, malls, hospitals, and even gold mines are building their own power. As a result, solar has jumped from near zero in 2019 to about 10 percent of South Africa’s generating capacity.
That shift matters for the environment and for everyday stability. It also squeezes Eskom, the state utility that relied on aging coal plants and frequent load shedding. When higher income customers generate their own power, Eskom loses revenue and raises prices, which pushes even more people toward private solar.
China is not just exporting gear. It is also bidding to help expand South Africa’s grid so solar power can move around the country. However, that raises hard questions about jobs and security. Researchers note that installation work is local, but most equipment is imported, so many manufacturing jobs stay overseas.
Still, the biggest fairness problem is closer to home. Many low income residents cannot afford panels or qualify for loans, even as prices fall. So the benefits for savings, health, and cleaner air do not reach everyone yet. Meanwhile, coal Pollution still harms people and animals across the region.
The good news is that faster, cheaper clean power is possible. Now the challenge is making it shared. Support policies that expand access, and keep climate action practical, including choosing plant based meals more often.
