Did you know up to one million dogs are killed in the dog meat trade each year in Indonesia alone? If you did not know, you are not alone. Many people are unaware of the magnitude of the brutal dog meat trade, and that is why several animal welfare groups and international celebrities have joined forces to tackle this issue with a new organization called Dog Meat-Free Indonesia.

Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN), Change For Animals Foundation (CFAF), Animal Friends Jogja (AFJ), and Humane Society International (HSI) founded Dog Meat-Free Indonesia in order to work collaboratively to tackle the dog meat trade in Indonesia. Among the celebrities lending their voice to the campaign are one of our favorite animal advocates, Ricky Gervais, Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley, actor Peter Egan, Indonesian actors Sophia Latjuba and Chelsea Islan, and Indonesian singer Gamaliel Tapiheru. They have created a video to spread public awareness to combat this atrocity and increase support for Indonesia’s dogs, which you can watch here:

The dog meat trade, although typically centralized within Asian countries and consumed by a small percentage of the population, is an epidemic that is of global concern for two primary reasons. First, dogs, many of whom are beloved pets who are kidnapped from their homes, are brutally handled, shoved into bags, have their bodies and jaws tied up, and are then thrown onto trucks to be shipped to slaughterhouses where they will be stuck in a nightmare watching dog after dog violently butchered right before their eyes. Not only is this practice undeniably cruel, but it poses a serious public health risk, as these dogs are not vaccinated or given veterinary care, and it is causing the uncontrolled spread of lethal rabies and other zoonotic diseases that are spread to both dogs and humans who handle or consume these dogs.

Although the dog meat trade is illegal in Indonesia, it still runs rampant, and the innocent dogs need your help. To find out how you can become involved in Dog Meat-Free Indonesia’s work, visit their website here.

And please lend your voice to these beautiful dogs by sharing this with your network and educating your friends and family about the truth of the dog meat trade.
