On June 24, in Minneapolis, a one-year-old cat named Rue endured a terrifying ordeal. Thrown from the 12th floor of an apartment building, she fell twelve stories to the pavement below. This horrific incident, witnessed by several bystanders, was immediately reported to local animal control.
Rue sustained severe injuries, including two broken legs, a broken left foot, and a fractured jaw. Fortunately, Home for Life Animal Sanctuary quickly intervened, providing emergency care. Rue’s legs were set, and a nasogastric tube was inserted to ensure she received adequate nutrition and hydration despite her jaw injury.
An update from the sanctuary on July 2 detailed Rue’s recovery progress. An innovative dental procedure had been performed to stabilize her fractured jaw by bonding her upper and lower teeth. This critical step was essential for her healing.
Remarkably, Rue was discharged from her initial hospital stay on June 25 and placed in a loving foster home. Despite her trauma, Rue’s foster parent reported that she remained affectionate, purring and allowing gentle handling. Her resilience was evident as she began eating on her own and attempting to walk with casts on her front legs. Full-body X-rays revealed no additional damage to her internal organs or skeleton.
However, the legal outcome of Rue’s case remains unresolved. Home for Life expressed frustration on social media, highlighting that no charges of animal cruelty had been filed against the perpetrator, despite the severity of the crime.
While justice for Rue is still pending, her recovery journey offers hope. The sanctuary remains committed to her healing, writing on July 2, “We hope that today marks a turning point for her and that she is on the way to healing and a life of love and caring.”
