The story of Steven Mason, “Mason” to his friends, the rescued Husky-Lab-Rottweiler that saved his guardian and three other pups from a wolf is one that can only be described as both heart-breaking and beautiful. I will warn you, this is a tear-jerker so go grab some tissues now. After his epic death, his guardian created a photo storyline on Imgur to share his story with the world.

After 16years of eagerly following at the heels of  his guardian through countless adventures conquering mountain tops and hiking trails, Mason was beginning to lose his hearing and eyesight, his owner feared she would have to put him down. Despite his old age and growing frailty, Mason never missed a step, hike, or a hug, delighting in the chance to go adventure with his best friend.

On their final walk together, Mason, his guardian and three other dogs set out for a quick hike around the property but were met on the trail by a hungry wolf. Mason’s guardian remarks she hadn’t seen a wolf around the for 15 years, and made sure to give the animal ample space and respect, expecting it would be scared off by the sight of a human and four dogs.

The wolf, however, was not. Mason’s guardian quickly realized the wolf’s hunger outweighed any sense of fear and a fateful tussle between the wolf, Mason and his guardian. Mason’s guardian attempted to ward off the wolf with her ski poles, but was unsuccessful. As the wolf lunged for one of the smaller dogs, Mason sprung into action seemingly forgetting all the trappings of his age.

Sacrificing himself to save his life-long friend and guardian, along with three other young dogs, Mason is remembered with the utmost fondness. Although she laments the loss of her companion, Mason’s guardian does not begrudge the wolf, but knows she only did what was necessary to survive.
