Animals Asia has been fighting to end bear bile farming in Vietnam since 1998 and has successfully rescued over 600 bears throughout Vietnam and China. A moon bear named Sky has now joined the ranks after being rescued from a bile farm in the northern province of Lao Cai, Vietnam. Sky had lived 14 long, brutal years in a tiny, barren cage after being poached from the wild as a cub. Her life had been filled with nothing but loneliness, pain, and despair — all while having her bile routinely extracted from her gallbladder.

Her salvation finally arrived, however, and the Animals Asia team showed up to free this innocent girl from the prison she’d known her entire life. Sky has since been transported to the Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre in Vinh Phuc province where she will begin the long road to recovery. She will undergo 45 days of quarantine, medical treatment, and reintroduction before her first taste of real freedom.

Though the practice of consuming bear bile has existed in Asia for thousands of years, bear bile farming is no longer a popular practice in Vietnam. Nevertheless, moon bears and sun bears are still suffering extreme abuse on the farms that remain. Thanks to the amazing and dedicated work by Animals Asia, however, these innocent bears have hope. Last year, the organization signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Vietnamese government agreeing to rescue all of the remaining bile bears by the year 2022.

It is estimated that 800 bears still remain on bear bile farms in the country. Animals Asia is doing all they can to get to each and every one of them before it is too late. These precious beings deserve to experience something more — friendship, care, respect, love, and so much more! You can help make the end of bear bile farms a reality by making a donation so they may have the same chance as Sky.
