Bats in Backpack Get New Home Thanks to Kind Man

Tiny bat

An Australian man got a surprise when something small and fuzzy fell out of his bag. Australia is home to creatures like snakes or huntsman spiders, which may have posed an unwelcome encounter. Fortunately, the backpack bandits turned out to be several bats who had chosen the bag as a warm place to hibernate for the winter.

The bats who had taken up residence in the backpack were microbats. Microbats are tiny, insect-eating members of bat species who primarily use echolocation for navigating and hunting. The microbats who had taken up residence in the backpack were Gould’s Wattled Bats, according to Bat Rescue SA

After finding the bats, the man contacted Bat Rescue SA to find out what he should do. Luckily, this kind man was concerned about the bats and wanted to know how he could help them. The bat experts told the man how to build a bat box to keep the little creatures safe through the winter. Bat boxes are man-made places where bats can roost through the winter. Soon, the bat’s new home was constructed and placed high on the side of a shed. The bats were now ready to move into their new space!

Bats are important to the environment for many reasons. Microbats eat insects, which helps control pest populations. Unfortunately, human activity is negatively impacting bats. Loss of habitat, climate change, and fungal diseases such as white-nose syndrome are decimating bat populations. If you find a bat in need of assistance, follow this kind bat friend’s lead. Call a local wildlife group for help, and provide habitat for bats if it is necessary and you are able.

Bat populations around the world are struggling. Sign this petition to Help Bats in Kentucky!
