As The Josh Willimas Band took to the stage during the Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver Blue Grass Festival in Denton, North Carolina, they knew that they were surrounded by fans of bluegrass music. They just didn’t bank on some of those fans having wings and living in nests! Part way through their rendition of the song “Mordecai,” a baby bird flew purposefully down to the stage and perched on Josh’s guitar, watching him intently (1:30).

The musician is visibly flustered at first, but the show must go on and he continues singing while he figures out exactly who’s chosen to join him on the stage. When he discovers it’s a bird, his entire demeanor changes from confused concern to pure amusement. “Once I saw it was a bird, I was really tickled, and everyone seemed to get a kick out of it sitting there on my guitar.”

Instead of shooing his new admirer away Josh rolls with the situation, taking the performance from admirable to adorable in an instant. Not many people can say that crashing the stage of their favorite musician resulted in a serenade, but there’s a certain feathered fan that can scratch that off of their bucket list now.
