The Azores have recently taken a monumental step in marine Conservation by establishing the largest marine protected area (MPA) network in the North Atlantic. This pioneering initiative spans approximately 287,000 square kilometers, covering 30% of the waters surrounding this autonomous Portuguese archipelago.

This extensive network is divided into two protection categories: “fully protected” and “highly protected” zones. In the fully protected areas, prohibitive measures are in place against all extractive and destructive activities, such as fishing. These zones focus on preserving marine life undisturbed, while still permitting regulated non-extractive activities like swimming, diving, and other forms of marine tourism. Luis Bernardo Brito e Abreu, adviser to the president of the Azores government, emphasizes that this setup aims to bolster Conservation efforts significantly while fostering sustainable economic opportunities.

The highly protected zones allow for minimal impact activities, including traditional pole and line fishing, which are less disruptive to the ecosystem. According to Brito e Abreu, this dual approach not only maximizes conservation outcomes but also minimizes the economic impact on local fishing communities, thereby supporting the archipelago’s blue economy.

The decision to establish this network followed extensive research and exploration by both local and international scientists, including a significant effort by National Geographic’s Pristine Seas initiative. Their research has mapped over 21,469 km² of the Azorean seabed, revealing over 300 seamounts and a rich biodiversity that includes cold-water corals and a variety of sponges.

Alan Friedlander, a senior marine scientist involved in the expeditions, points out that these seamounts have faced threats from bottom trawling and other fishing methods. He also highlights the Azores’ role as a crucial biodiversity corridor that aids in the migration of various marine species across continents.

This initiative represents a crucial step toward achieving the global Conservation target of protecting 30% of Earth’s land and ocean by 2030. By leading in such Conservation efforts, the Azores not only protect their unique ecosystem but also set a sustainable example for other regions to follow, balancing ecological responsibility with economic vitality.
