Remi, an abandoned newborn mouse, was discovered in a hallway by Miranda Conway, who brought him to safety.
When Miranda first found the mouse, he was tiny and must have been left there by his mother. She contacted many animal care and rehabilitation centers, but unfortunately, none of them accepted mice. Thus, Miranda took matters into her own hands and decided to take him home and nurture him the best she could. She could tell that he was a fighter and wanted to live!
Miranda fed the mouse every two hours and cut open a sock to give him a warm place to rest. The two of them became inseparable! Watch this video to see Remi grow and transform into a healthy and strong mouse!
If you find an abandoned baby animal, immediately contact an animal rehabilitation center. They will have to ensure that the animal was abandoned. Many people who find baby animals think that the animals have been abandoned when the mother is actually just away and will return soon. Taking the animals could be dangerous for everyone involved, especially since baby animals have such intense needs.
Newborns will need to receive proper care within 2 to 4 hours (even through the night) to survive, especially if the baby’s eyes aren’t open yet. These two-hour interval feedings will last for the full two weeks until the baby’s eyes are open. Using a very small feeding syringe, feed the newborn Pedialyte directly into its mouth. Be very careful not to push too much electrolyte fluid in too quickly or the baby will aspirate. If you’re sure the mouse is abandoned, while you’re waiting to get in contact with a wildlife rehabilitator, you could also find a small box and line it with a soft T-shirt or towel to give the newborn a place to sleep.
