Our dogs do so many amazing things for us every day that we might not even realize. Even something as small as happily welcoming us home from work can make a complete difference in our mood – studies even show that having a pet can improve overall well-being. But there are other times when our dogs step in to help us in ways that are far above and beyond these little things.

Take the story of Duke the dog, for example. Duke was adopted into his forever home about six years ago and quickly became an integral member of the family. When Duke’s guardians had a baby, he became the little girl’s protector. This dog’s devotion to his family paid off ten-fold one night when he alerted his parents that something was wrong with the baby.

Duke’s mom explains that he’s usually very calm, but he was acting so strange and scared that they had no choice but to get up and investigate. Thank goodness they did because it led them to find the baby in her crib not breathing. Luckily, they were able to call an ambulance in time to save the baby’s life, all due to Duke’s amazing action.

Now that’s a true dog hero!
