Do you often find yourself suffering from digestion problems, chronic fatigue, moodiness, and food cravings? If yes, then these are all signs that your body may be dealing with inflammation, which can also be a sign of larger health problems, such as cancer or diabetes. Luckily, inflammation can be remedied by diet, specifically by swapping out highly refined foods, meat, and dairy for whole, plant-based foods.
In the video above, plant-based nutrition expert Dr. Michael Greger, MD, dishes on how whole plant-based sources of sugar and fat specifically can alleviate inflammation caused by the consumption of refined carbs and meat. According to Dr. Greger, the addition of meat to meals may “make the pancreas work extra hard,” which can, in turn, lead to a spike in insulin levels. However, when you combine refined carbs with whole, plant-based sources of fat and sugar (such as a nut butter and jelly sandwich), studies have shown that there is a reduction in oxidation, which leads to less inflammation. Berries, in particular, were shown to be especially effective at reducing inflammation.
