Most likely, you’ve been prescribed antibiotics. Even more likely, you’ve taken them and on more than one occasion. Antibiotics are crucial for fighting and healing certain conditions and yet they also have potential drawbacks depending on the type.
For instance, ever heard of delayed-onset drug-induced liver injury (DILI)? Turns out, this is a very common side effect from consuming antibiotics — in particular, widely used amoxicillin-clavulanate and cefazolin — leading to a variety of liver issues in as little as “[one to three] weeks after exposure of a single infusion” or as long as “a few years of treatment,” such as was seen with nitrofurantoin, which was linked to “acute liver failure (ALF) or autoimmune-like reaction[s].”
This is not the only side effect of antibiotic consumption. Antibiotics have also been linked to decreased health of your microbiome (the ecosystem of healthy bacteria throughout your body) — in fact, they have been referred to as “napalm to our microbiome” — and damaged mitochondria (the “tiny engines that power every human cell) — which are “structured just like simple bacteria” and are found to be “antibiotics’ accidental victim.”
While it’s almost impossible to go through life without taking antibiotics, you can certainly try to reduce the regularity by incorporating plant-based, all-natural foods that share the same treating qualities as antibiotics. There are a slew of antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and antimicrobial plant-based foods that are easy to integrate into your diet such as vitamin C, garlic, oregano oil, onion, Echinacea, myrrh extract, thyme oil, and even ozone-enhanced water — an alternative to chlorine that is “100 times more effective at destroying bacteria and other microbes than bleach without leaving behind dangerous compounds or causing antimicrobial resistance.”
Here are a few vegan-friendly natural antibiotic products to get you started!
This essential vitamin not only boosts energy levels, but it’s also an incredibly efficient agent for warding off sickness, treating ailments, and healing. This is also backed by science! In 2017, there was a review of 148 vitamin C-based studies, all of which demonstrated “the ability of vitamin C to prevent or limit infections caused by bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.” This GMOFreeVitamins Ultra Fine Vitamin C Powder is a great alternative to the popular daily supplement form and is easy to use in your favorite smoothies, shakes, or even in certain baking recipes! GMOFreeVitamins is proud to offer a product that is non-GMO, vegan-friendly, and exceeds the strictest supplement standards. This powder promises to boost your immune system through pure L-Ascorbic acid, pure antioxidants, and maximum bioavailability. A 16-oz container costs $49.50.
Digirati says “I did a ton of research before buying this vitamin C powder. I wanted to only buy products where the raw materials are not sourced from China (due to toxic metals) and this brand is China free. Super fine powder dissolves easily in water (you really don’t even need to stir it. Only complaint is the shape of the container (it’s too hard to reach the product when you get down to the last quarter of powder). They should make the container shorter and wider so it has a bigger opening to fit your hand in.”
Much like vitamin C, garlic is one of those well-known, well-loved, and well-used basic ingredients that also happens to be an antimicrobial powerhouse. This blend is made with odorless garlic oil, chlorophyll, parsley, and organic extra virgin olive oil and does not contain animal ingredients, soybean oil, and magnesium stearate. I work outside on my summer breaks and spend as much time hiking or on the motorcycle as I can. Very little allergy stuffiness anymore. I don’t want to rely on medications, and I believe this helped me greatly reduce my use of them. I used to take an allergy pill and decongestant very often in the summer. Now it is a very rare occurrence. I also happen to love the flavor.”
While myrrh is not widely used — a “reddish-brown dried sap from a thorny tree” called C. molmol — this sap’s ability to ward off pathogens definitely is a widely recognized characteristic. In particular, a study in 2000 found that myrrh “could kill off several everyday pathogens” including E.coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans.” This Florida Herbs Myrrh Tincture is part of project vegan meaning the product is not only vegan-friendly, but it is also free of hormones, preservatives, artificial ingredients, antibiotics, gluten, wheat, dairy, sugar, soy, and yeast! Eating raw garlic is torture, though I still do that, but the pill is so much easier so I can take it twice a day. Doesn’t have any after taste but it’s garlic, what do you expect?! :) I wouldn’t mind if it had one. Definitely ordering it again.”
