You pushed your body a little harder this week  at the gym to make up for the workouts you missed last week, or you played an extra game of soccer this week even though you know you shouldn’t of or you decided to finish that home project on your own that you really needed someone else to help you with.  For some reason we don’t seem to listen to our bodies until we feel the aches and pains from those tight muscles, that ache in the low back or that pain in your knees.

When you are feeling the aches and pains it could be from a strain or a pulled muscle, which is a result of an overstretched muscle fiber that tears.  Sounds painful and IT can be if you have ever had one…it certainly doesn’t tickle!!!  Common symptoms of a strain is stiffness, discolouration and some bruising.

Typically aches and pains can be followed by symptoms of swelling, heat, redness and even loss of function is possible, which are all signs of inflammation. Inflammation is your body’s protective attempt to initiate the healing process.  In other words, it is sending you an SOS!!!

The best way to mange strains and muscle pains is to apply an ice pack.  “The American College of Sports Medicine advices applying ice several times a day for the first 24hrs to lessen swelling and stiffness.  If bruising appears, ACSM recommends resting, icing and compressing and elevating the affected limb for up to 72hrs.”
