You’ve most likely heard of folate or vitamin B9 — probably in relation to pregnancy — yet it’s also a vital component of a healthy, well-rounded diet.

Folic acid is the term used for the synthetic version of folate that’s used in supplements. While folate is naturally acquired through the food we eat specifically “dried beans, peas, lentils, oranges, whole-wheat products, liver, asparagus, beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and spinach,” folic acid can be consumed via capsules, tablets, or gummies.

So, what does folic acid do for us?

To begin, folic acid “helps your body produce and maintain new cells, and also helps prevent changes to DNA that may lead to cancer.” On top of that, our bodies use folic acid to make new cells. This incredible vitamin can also be “used to treat folic acid deficiency and certain types of anemia (lack of red blood cells) caused by folic acid deficiency,” along with a slew of other medical conditions. During pregnancy, folic acid is an incredibly important nutrient that helps “prevent birth defects of your baby’s brain and spinal cord.”

If you’re considering taking a folic acid supplement, make sure to speak with a medical professional first, as not everyone needs to increase their folic acid intake.

With that said, once approved by your doctor, here are a few vegan-friendly folic acid supplements to get you started!
