However, a recent World Health Organization (WHO) review reveals that incorrect interpretations of health information, which tend to increase during outbreaks and disasters, can negatively impact mental health, fuel vaccine hesitancy, and delay healthcare provision. Therefore it’s essential that we counter these infodemics and online health misinformation.
The WHO review analyzed 31 published studies related to fake news, misinformation, disinformation, and infodemics in the context of health. Misinformation refers to false or inaccurate information intended to deceive, while disinformation also encompasses misleading or biased information, manipulated narratives, and propaganda. The authors of the review aimed to understand the role of social media in spreading misinformation and identify ways to address its negative effects on public health.
The review found that up to 51 percent of vaccine-related social media posts contained health misinformation, along with up to 28.8 percent of COVID-19 posts and up to 60 percent of pandemic-related posts. Among YouTube videos on emerging infectious diseases, 20-30 percent contained inaccurate or misleading information.
