The coronavirus pandemic has stretched healthcare thin around the world. Hospitals are overwhelmed in many countries and nurses, doctors, and hospital staff do not have enough supplies. One man decided that he wanted to raise money for the National Health Service in his country, and he decided to do it by walking. The catch is that he’s 99 years old, but that didn’t stop him one bit.
Captain Tom Moore is an army veteran who is turning 100 years old soon and is grateful for all the medical service he’s received from the NHS as well as the wonderful nurses and doctors who treated him when he had cancer and a broken hip. So he decided to give back by setting up a fundraiser. His goal was to raise £1,000 by completing 100 laps in his garden with the help of a walker.
He more than crushed his goal, with now over 3 million pounds raised in donations. In just one week, over 98,000 people from around the world were so inspired by him that they sent donations.
Captain Moore told BBC: “When you think of who it is all for – all those brave and super doctors and nurses we have got – I think they deserve every penny, and I hope we get some more for them too.” And he has a message of hope for everyone else too: “Let’s all carry on and remember that things will get better.”
What an amazing human and uplifting thing to do! Surely the NHS will appreciate his incredible deed.
