The rare vitamin K2 may be “the missing link between diet and several chronic diseases.”
Originally, this vitamin was known as an essential element of blood coagulation, also called blood clotting, and, upon its discovery, was dubbed Koagulationsvitamin by the germans and therefore has been shortened down to vitamin K.
As you dig further into the details, vitamin K is then divided into vitamin K1 — which is “found in plant foods like leafy greens” — and vitamin K2 — which is “found in animal foods and fermented foods.” Dig deeper and you discover that vitamin K2 has a few “different subtypes, the most important ones being MK-4 and MK-7.”
Even though it’s taking scientists a bit of time to sort out the true differences between vitamin K1 and K2, the current studies have found that, while both are essential for our health and are important for “blood clotting, calcium metabolism and heart health,” vitamin K2 may play a larger role these crucial health benefits. Vitamin K2 has been shown to help prevent heart disease, improve bone health, reduce the risk of osteoporosis, improve the health of your teeth, and may even help fight cancer.
