Serena Williams is one of the most inspirational athletes in the world. She’s a working mother, arguably the best tennis player in the world, and a savvy businesswoman. On top of all her other amazing qualities, she’s also vegan. Her plant-based diet not only gives her all the strength and fuel to dominate tennis events and be the fierce, strong athlete she is, but it helps her stand against all the “killing in the world,” something that inspired her latest fashion collection.
In an interview with Essence, Williams was asked what the creative direction was behind her latest collection and she replied: “It was a fashion passport. I was thinking of some of my favorite places to travel, which ultimately when I thought about it, was Africa. That’s where I got the giraffe print from. And then also the vegan leather because I feel like a lot of things are being killed and we’re not saving the earth. We can all just do one small thing and help out so that was also a lot of our inspiration.”
It’s inspiring that not only is Williams committed to a vegan diet, but a lifestyle too. She isn’t investing in their death for their skin to be used in her fashion.
Her collection includes blazers, dresses, jumpsuits, pant suits, pants, and more!
While discussing her collection, Williams also interestingly mentioned giraffes, which are currently in much need of protection. They are widely killed for products like jackets, boots, pillows and even Bible covers. And they’re also killed for “sport” by trophy hunters. As a wealthy and influential businesswoman, this decision by Williams can inspire other designers to follow her example and also make fashion without all the killing.
If like Williams, you want less death in the world, sign this petition to ban the trophy hunting of giraffes for sport or for their use in fashion and other products.
