As the Palisades Fire continues to devastate communities in Los Angeles, the nonprofit organization In Defense of Animals is stepping up to aid animal rescuers and provide critical Support to animals in danger. Among those leading the charge is board member Sammy Zablen, whose courageous efforts have helped save lives amid treacherous conditions.
Zablen answered an urgent call from Philozoia animal rescue in Malibu’s Tuna Canyon on January 8. Two ponies were at risk due to the encroaching fire, and evacuating them became a race against time. The journey, usually a brief 20-minute drive, stretched into a grueling three-hour ordeal due to blocked roads, rockslides, and fire debris.
Upon arriving the ponies’ corral was destroyed, and the animals were nowhere to be found. Undeterred by the active fire and hazardous conditions, the rescuers searched for 30 minutes, leaving food and water behind and soaking the roof of the property to prevent further damage. Although the ponies were later recovered by Philozoia, the rescue center itself was reduced to ashes.
Earlier that day, Philozoia had successfully evacuated a pig and 38 dogs, though two dogs remain missing. The organization is now seeking foster homes for senior dogs left homeless by the disaster.
In Defense of Animals has teamed up with other groups like Advanced Fire Rescue and Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue to coordinate resources and access dangerous areas. The organization is also offering emergency Support to animal caregivers and rescuers, including free temporary housing for displaced animals.
