In 2001, vegetarian Stella McCartney launched her eponymous fashion line. Since its inception, the brand has stated that it is a “vegetarian company”. Unlike many of her peers, McCartney eschews animal products such as feathers, furs, and leather. However, recent years have also seen the legendary fashion brand work towards creating more sustainable products. Indeed, in 2019, Stella McCartney was awarded the Green Fashion Award Ground Breaker Award. In 2023 she was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) Award for her contributions to both fashion and sustainability. The brand has also launched several eco-friendly products. These included a mycelium leather handbag; the first in the world that was commercially available. Now, Stella McCartney is teaming up with legendary champagne Maison Veuve Clicquot to create cruelty-free products from grape waste.
As one of the leading champagne Maison’s in the world, Veuve Clicquot has also begun to move towards more sustainable practices. This includes revamping packaging to be more sustainable and pledging to cut emissions by 50 percent by 2030. However, making use of grape waste will help the legendary champagne producers reduce their environmental footprint even further.
Grape waste is left over from the champagne-making process. The partnership between Stella McCartney and Veuve Clicquot will use this waste to create VEGEA. This Italian company uses “vegetal, renewable and recycled raw materials” such as “grape leftovers from winemaking, vegetal oils and natural fibers from agriculture” to create fabrics that would otherwise be derived from animals or fossil fuels.
The partnership between the two luxury brands shows a growing understanding of the need for sustainability in the fashion industry. Fashion not only uses high amounts of fossil fuels, but also contributes to microplastic pollution, water Pollution, and other environmental degradation. By embracing fabrics made from renewable, repurposed materials, the collaboration between Stella McCartney and Veuve Clicquot offers a glimmer of hope that fashion can harness circularity to lessen its environmental impact.
