Amazing Sustainable Structure Creates a Habitat for Humans and Wild Animals

Terreform ONE, an amazing sustainable architecture nonprofit organization, has unveiled the construction of its latest design. The 1000-square-foot Fab Tree Hab uses the power of architectural design to create a space that provides a habitat for both humans and wild animals. By using living, natural alternatives to ecologically harmful traditional building materials the Fab Tree Hab creates a space that is both usable and environmentally friendly. The nonprofit describes this project as a “terrestrial reef and grafted living tree structure.”

Many materials which are commonly used in construction can be quite harmful to the environment. Materials such as lumber or stone can be environmentally costly to obtain. Additionally, turning many raw materials into construction-grade materials can be wasteful and energy-inefficient. 

In contrast, Terraform ONE’s Fab Tree Hab uses minimal amounts of concrete and natural elements to create the building’s foundation. These natural elements include cedar, jute, beeswax, and pine resin. Then, scaffolds are used to shape tree clusters. As the trees grow, they create the base for the wall system. Additionally, the trees provide habitat for wild animal species. By increasing habitat, and providing micro-ecosystems, the Fab Tree House helps to preserve biodiversity. Simultaneously, it creates usable space for humans. 

By creating a space that creates a habitat for multiple species, the Fab Tree Hab upholds Terreform ONE’s goal of designing to prevent extinction. Habitat loss is a critical issue facing animal species around the world. By designing a space that affords multiple species a place to live, the Fab Tree hab creates a sustainable structure that works in tandem with the environment.

The Fab Tree Hab is located in New Windsor, New York. It is near the Storm King Art Center. It will be used as an observatory, wildlife refuge, and education center. The Terreform ONE team has invited community members to follow the project’s evolution as it adapts throughout the seasons.
