Recent research reveals a troubling link between black plastics commonly found in children’s toys, kitchen utensils, and takeout containers and harmful flame retardants. These toxic substances may leach from recycled electronic products, raising concerns for public health, especially for children.
According to Megan Liu, the lead author of the study from Toxic-Free Future, an environmental advocacy group, one of the most alarming findings was the presence of high levels of flame retardants in black plastic pirate coin beads often used as toys. These beads contained an astonishing concentration of up to 22,800 parts per million of flame retardants, which is nearly 3% by weight. “Kids will often play with toys multiple days in a row until they tire of them,” Liu explained, emphasizing the potential for prolonged exposure.
The study identified the hazardous flame retardants in these consumer products as similar to those found in electronic devices, such as TVs. Liu noted that the contamination arises from recycling processes that mistakenly incorporate plastics from electronic waste.
One example cited in the study was a black plastic sushi tray, which had levels of the flame retardant decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE) reaching 11,900 parts per million. This chemical belongs to a group known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which have been linked to serious health issues, including cancer and developmental problems. A recent study found that individuals with elevated PBDE levels in their blood were approximately 300% more likely to die from cancer than those with lower levels. Despite the complete ban of decaBDE in 2021 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency due to its health risks, this substance was detected in 70% of the tested samples, with concentrations far exceeding the European Union’s limit of 10 parts per million. Based on their findings, researchers estimated that daily exposure to contaminated kitchen utensils, such as spatulas, could average 34.7 parts per million of decaBDE.
Flame retardants are also prevalent in various household items, including furniture, car upholstery, and infant car seats. These chemicals can migrate from their original products, attaching to dust and food, leading to potential ingestion. The North American Flame Retardant Alliance (NAFRA) defended the use of these substances, arguing that they play a critical role in fire safety. However, Liu highlights the risks involved in recycling black plastics, stating that such practices can lead to unintended contamination.
The study, published in the journal Chemosphere, focused solely on black plastics, meaning it does not address whether other colors of plastic might also pose similar risks. Liu pointed out that previous international studies have noted comparable contamination issues, and the U.S. has been lagging in examining food contact materials.
In their investigation, researchers analyzed 203 consumer products for bromine, a marker for flame retardants, and closely examined 20 products with the highest levels. Dr. Leonardo Trasande, a professor at NYU Langone Health, underscored the gravity of brominated flame retardants due to their toxic properties and their tendency to accumulate in the body over time. “I’m not aware of any safe level of brominated flame retardants,” he stated.
To mitigate exposure, Liu recommends replacing plastic kitchen utensils with stainless steel alternatives or opting for plastic-free options. Regular cleaning of surfaces to eliminate dust that may harbor these chemicals is also essential. Additionally, Birnbaum cautioned against reusing black plastic containers for food, advising that food should be transferred to glass or stainless steel dishes immediately after purchase. She also warned against heating food in black plastic containers, as heat can encourage the leaching of harmful substances.
