Another gun tragedy struck Florida this month when a toddler discovered a loaded, unsecured gun and accidentally shot and killed her 21-year-old mother, Shamaya Lynn. Shamaya’s co-workers, who were on a Zoom call with the mother at the time, saw the toddler emerge from behind her, heard a noise, and watched Shamaya fall backward.
The shooting joins a wave of gun violence, school shootings, other accidental shootings in Florida. But Florida gun law remains lax. Florida does not require gun owners to register their weapons. The state also does not require individuals to obtain licenses to own guns, permits to purchase them, or even safety training to purchase them.
You can encourage Florida lawmakers to prevent gun tragedies by passing stricter gun laws. As a first step, sign this petition asking lawmakers to mandate safety training for gun purchasers.
