Petition: Don’t Let Elon Musk Bully People Out of Their Homes

Large companies intimidating and bullying residents out of their homes in order to buy their land is not an unfamiliar occurrence. Unfortunately, this is a reality for many people who live in areas that are being gentrified and redeveloped. Elon Musk is one of the latest perpetrators of this cruel act.

In 2015, Musk put the foundations for his company, SpaceX, in a small Texas town called Boca Chica. He started buying homes to make room for a new Starship program test site and has now gotten twenty-three of the thirty-five original residents to sell their homes to him. However, for many residents, this was not of their own free will. Musk and his company have repeatedly bothered and even threatened residents. They also lied about the disturbances that SpaceX would cause. Residents have been warned about their windows shattering and several rockets have exploded. Furthermore, although SpaceX claims that they are offering to buy residents’ homes for three times the value, residents say that this is not the case. The repeated offers have actually been significantly lower than the market value. The last twelve residents want to stay as long as possible but are currently being threatened with Texas’ Eminent Domain laws, which would force them to sell their homes. 

SpaceX’s Boca Chica expansion not only impacts the people living there, but also the wildlife. Boca Chica is located within a wildlife refuge, which protects many different species of animals including migratory birds and sea turtles. Elon Musk’s selfish actions are harming countless people and animals in Boca Chica and he must be stopped.

Sign this petition to demand that Musk stop threatening the residents and wildlife in Boca Chica with the expansion of SpaceX.
