Mexican Gray Wolf

Unfortunately, the world is not a very peaceful or safe place for many individuals. From conflict to abuse to exploitation, there is so much cruelty inflicted on both humans and animals. While this can get disheartening and difficult to hear about, petitions are a great way to use your voice for good. Just by signing one, you are a part of helping those who are not treated fairly. You can even share them with your friends and acquaintances to increase your impact.

Through petitions, we can reach those in power and demand justice for others. They are valuable tools for making positive changes in the world. If you are looking for a way to help animals and humans, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including Urge Congress to Give Workers 12 Weeks of Paid Family Leave, Tell Major Film Studios to Pay Writers a Fair Wage, and Tell Authorities to Stop Killing Endangered Wolves.

We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.

1. Tell Norfolk Southern to Follow Through in Cleaning Up Its Toxic Mess

Besides poisoning the water, air, and soil in East Palestine, Ohio, the Norfolk Southern train crash also led to the death of almost 45,000 aquatic animals. This is not only terrible for the fish who lost their lives, but the massive loss of life will likely negatively impact the local ecosystem as well. The government has ordered the train company to clean up its mess, but it’s also important that we put pressure on the company to do a thorough job. Please sign this petition to tell Norfolk Southern to fully clean up its toxic mess!

2. Urge Congress to Give Workers 12 Weeks of Paid Family Leave

There is no national mandatory paid family leave in the United States, even though studies have shown it can help reduce stress, improve health, and help parents become more financially stable. Congress is considering a bill that would give workers four weeks of leave, but that is still far too little. Please sign this petition to urge Congress to give workers 12 weeks of mandatory paid family leave!

3. Tell Biden to Shut Down Toxic Oil Refinery in the U.S. Virgin Islands

A massive oil refinery on one of the U.S. Virgin Islands lay dormant for about ten years after several lawsuits helped shut it down. However, a little over two years ago, Donald Trump decided to reopen the plant, and within days a vapor cloud full of petroleum and water rained down on the nearby town. Many marine animals and residents are still suffering from the consequences of this, and the plant is still open. Please sign this petition to tell the Biden Administration to shut down this oil refinery again!

4. Tell Brazil’s President to Enshrine the Amazon Rainforest’s Right to Exist into Law

Environmentalists were excited when Lula de Silva defeated Jair Bolsonaro to become the president of Brazil. Lula promised that he would try and undo much of the damage caused by the former president to the Amazon Rainforest. This forest is a critical component of the health and well-being of humans and nonhuman animals alike. Please sign this petition to urge President Lula de Silva to enshrine the rainforest’s right to exist into law!

5. Tell Major Film Studios to Pay Writers a Fair Wage

Almost 98% of unionized film and television writers have gone on strike after studios refused to pay them fair wages. This will likely cause many shows and movies to be canceled or delayed. Screenwriters are being paid 14% less than five years ago and have even had to turn to public assistance for help. Please sign this petition to tell major film studios to agree to the writers’ demands and pay them a fair wage!

6. Tell the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to Stop Killing Endangered Wolves

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently killed another endangered Mexican gray wolf, who left behind a pregnant mate and several children. Authorities have killed 22 of these wolves since their reintroduction in 1998, and 24 have inadvertently been killed after being captured. As is often the case, the wolf was murdered to protect the animal agriculture industry. Please sign this petition to urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to utilize non-lethal methods when dealing with animals and work to increase wolf populations!

7. Call on Legislators to Pass Bill That Would Help Prevent Future Pandemics

While we may still not know the origins of covid, it’s almost a virtual certainty that we will face another more serious virus because of animal agriculture and other animal use industries. Confining billions of animals yearly to live in their feces and urine is a perfect breeding ground for infectious diseases, and the transport of animals plays a large part in that. A new bill was proposed that “would prohibit the import, export, and interstate trade of live wildlife for the purpose of human consumption.” Please sign this petition to urge legislators to pass the Prevent Future Pandemics Act!

8. Urge NYC to Institute a “Lights Out” Policy to Protect Birds from Crashing into Windows

New York City has some of the most beautiful skyscrapers in the world, but they can also be deadly for birds. Up to a billion migratory birds are killed yearly in America because disorienting lights from buildings cause them to crash into windows. However, turning off lights at night can drastically reduce these collisions and also help save energy. Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers in New York City to institute a “lights out” policy and help protect birds!

9. Tell Congress to Address the National Nursing Shortage

There is currently a shortage of nurses in the United States, and a recent survey showed that a third of nurses are looking to leave the profession. A couple of ways to improve conditions for nurses are to emphasize workplace safety and mandate minimum nurse-to-patient staffing ratios. Please sign this petition to urge Congress to implement these common-sense measures and help Support nurses!

10. Urge Hasbro to Commit to Having a Net Zero Environmental Impact

In 2019, toy brand Hasbro announced that it would stop using plastic in its packaging. However, Hasbro recently announced that it would be re-introducing plastic packaging for select products. Hasbro needs to stop greenwashing and follow the lead of environmentally-friendly toy companies like LEGO, which decreased emissions by 95% by producing toys with green methanol. Please sign this petition to urge Hasbro to commit to having a net zero environmental impact!
