Uber is taking a significant step toward sustainability by offering riders the option to choose fully electric vehicles by default when hailing a ride. Announced by CEO Dara Khosrowshahi at the company’s annual Go Get Zero conference in London, this new “EV preference” feature aims to make green transportation more accessible in over 40 cities worldwide.

Previously, Uber’s “Uber Green” service included a mix of battery-electric and hybrid vehicles. The updated platform now allows users to select solely battery-electric cars, aligning with the growing demand for zero-emission mobility options. “The reality is that we will only reach net-zero emission goals if policymakers and other businesses do their part as well,” Khosrowshahi emphasized, highlighting the need for affordable electric vehicles, stronger EV mandates, and widespread charging infrastructure.
To Support its drivers in this transition, Uber is introducing an “EV Mentor” program that connects them with experienced electric vehicle owners. Additionally, the company has launched an AI chatbot powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT to answer drivers’ questions about purchasing and using electric vehicles. This initiative aims to alleviate concerns and provide valuable information to those considering the switch from gasoline-powered cars.
Transportation accounts for approximately 25% of global carbon emissions from human activities, contributing significantly to climate change and air Pollution. Ride-hailing services like Uber can exacerbate traffic congestion and Pollution if not managed sustainably. Recognizing this, Uber has set an ambitious goal to become a “zero-emissions platform” by 2040.
Beyond ride-hailing, Uber is expanding its eco-friendly efforts in other areas. In New York City and Los Angeles, the company is adding farmers’ market produce to its Uber Eats offerings, promoting local and sustainable food sources. In Paris, Uber is investing nearly $1 million to help restaurants switch to environmentally friendly packaging options, such as seaweed-based materials and biodegradable straws.
In the United Kingdom, Uber has partnered with British energy supplier Octopus Energy and Chinese EV manufacturer BYD to Support drivers transitioning to electric vehicles. This collaboration will co-fund 1,000 free home chargers, each worth nearly £1,000, and offer drivers access to cost-saving energy tariffs and discounts on public charging networks. Rebecca Tinucci, Uber’s head of global sustainability and former senior director of charging infrastructure at Tesla, stated, “This is the first partnership between Uber, a power company, and an EV manufacturer, and it will meaningfully reduce charging costs for drivers.”
As the conversation around electric vehicles becomes increasingly significant, especially ahead of the 2024 U.S. elections, Uber’s initiatives demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and a recognition of the broader trend toward all-electric mobility. The company’s multifaceted approach—ranging from rider options and driver Support to sustainable food delivery and international partnerships—marks a notable effort in reducing its environmental footprint and encouraging others to do the same.
