The Queens District Attorney’s Office has introduced a new comfort dog named Kimi. This lovable two-year-old Labrador retriever mix is making a significant impact by easing the stress that often accompanies traumatic events. Officials announced Kimi’s role at a press conference, highlighting her effectiveness in assisting individuals, especially children and women, who may struggle to communicate after experiencing distressing situations.
Kimi’s presence is not just about providing affection; it plays a vital role in building rapport between her and the individuals she helps. Jessica Reiss, a manager at Canine Companions for Independence, explained, “We tell kids, ‘You don’t have to tell me your story, but why don’t you tell Kimi?’” This simple approach allows victims to open up in a safe environment, making it easier for them to discuss sensitive topics. During her extensive training, Kimi mastered over 40 commands, showcasing her skills by learning tasks like opening doors, pushing buttons, and giving “fist bumps” with her nose.
Kimi accompanies victims during crucial moments, whether they are undergoing a medical examination, participating in an interview, or attending court hearings. Reiss noted that spending time with Kimi often helps individuals feel more comfortable. “People will often return from walking or tossing a ball for the pooch and finally feel ready to talk,” she shared. The canine’s calming influence has been especially beneficial in difficult cases where victims, particularly children, initially found it challenging to articulate their experiences. As Reiss remarked, “They brought the dog in, and all of a sudden, everything started to flow.”
Kimi began her work in Queens in August and has already made a difference in three cases, assisting victims, including two children. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz acknowledged Kimi’s invaluable Support, stating, “It is extremely difficult to speak about traumatic events, and service dogs like Kimi help vulnerable people feel more comfortable as they navigate through a prosecutor’s office and the courthouse.” Katz praised Kimi’s affectionate demeanor and high level of training, noting that the dog was provided at no cost after six months of preparation.
Interestingly, Kimi holds the distinction of being the only comfort dog working for any district attorney’s office in New York City. Although Staten Island previously had a comfort dog named Bronxie, that program ended when the dog passed away.
Jennifer Naiburg, the Chief Assistant District Attorney in Queens, commented on the positive impact of Kimi’s presence. She likened the comfort dog’s role to that of a professional counselor, emphasizing that Kimi creates a supportive atmosphere for everyone involved in the proceedings—unless someone is allergic, of course.
