Two new studies published in the journal Nature have painted a grim picture of the future for these organisms, essential for everything from fish to whales. Daniela Schmidt, a climate scientist at the University of Bristol, and her team have examined fossil records and modern data to track the resilience of plankton through historical climate changes and their current status.
Their findings are alarming. If global temperatures rise by 3 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels by 2100, plankton biomass could decline by over 10%. This decrease is not just a statistic; it represents a breakdown in the ocean’s food web, impacting fish and other marine animals.
The situation is made more urgent by the rate of this change. What took thousands of years during the last ice age is now occurring within a century, placing unprecedented stress on these organisms. Another aspect of the crisis is revealed through an extensive survey of plankton samples collected over eight decades, showing a 25% reduction in foraminifera, a type of plankton, since the 1940s. Many of these species are migrating from the equator to cooler, deeper waters, which may not be enough to ensure their survival.
The repercussions of a plankton decline are vast. Plankton are crucial in the carbon cycle; they absorb carbon dioxide, and upon dying, their shells deposit carbon on the ocean floor, sequestering it away from the atmosphere. This process is vital for mitigating the broader impacts of climate change.
Further compounding the issue, ocean acidification and warming hinder the nutrient circulation essential for plankton survival, making their environment increasingly hostile.
This research coincides with global discussions on climate action, emphasizing the urgent need for reduced emissions to safeguard marine life. As the backbone of the ocean’s ecosystems, protecting plankton is not just about preserving a species but about maintaining the health of the entire ocean and, by extension, our planet.
