Climate change is one of the biggest threats to so many different lifeforms on Earth, including human beings. Recent studies have found that Polar Bears could be extinct in 80 years; the concentration of CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere is the “highest it has been in human history;” and International Energy Agency (IEA) head warned that there may only be six months left to prevent a post-pandemic climate crisis.

Despite these many terrifying studies about the effects of climate change, many world leaders have not done much to prevent climate change. Some, like Trump, have even actively made policies that contribute to global warming and harm our planet. During his time in office, Trump has rolled back on approximately 100 environmental protections, and he is using Coronavirus as an excuse to continue these rollbacks. Around the end of 2019, the White House made plans to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. In April, the EPA severely weakened Mercury and Air Toxics Standards. One of the latest changes to environmental protections concerns one of the most important U.S. laws to protect the environment, NEPA.

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was signed into law in 1970 so that agencies would have to consider the environmental impact of their actions, as well as provide opportunities for public comment on their proposed constructions. On June 4, Trump signed an executive order to allow “expedited construction and energy projects for federal agencies to step over environmental reviews of projects in the interest of speed of completion.” On July 15, Trump finalized these plans. While Trump says that this change will boost the economy, it is detrimental to the environment and contributes to climate change. Furthermore, it will disproportionately affect communities of color and low-income communities, as they are often closest to areas with high levels of pollution. Now they won’t even be allowed to have a say in the projects that could cause great harm to their communities.

Environmentalists strongly oppose Trump’s changes as they severely weaken NEPA’s protections. Sign this petition to demand that the Trump Administration Restore NEPA!
