Plastic in Bali's Mangroves

Mangroves are an incredibly important part of the global ecosystem. They are a type of coastal wetland that is found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, that protect coastlines from erosion, provide a habitat for a variety of species, and even store carbon.

Unfortunately, plastic pollution is a major threat to these mangroves. Plastic debris can get caught in the roots of mangroves, damaging trees and wildlife, and preventing photosynthesis.

One year ago, this Tiktoker stumbled across a mangrove just 10 minutes away from Bali’s international airport, and was horrified by what they saw. The forest was so filled with plastic that you could barely see anything else.

With a little help from hundreds of volunteers and the Indonesian army, they did the impossible and cleaned up the mangrove!  30 barriers were placed to prevent plastic from passing into the mangrove and amazingly, over 300,000 pounds of plastic was removed and processed!
