Wave energy power station

Eco Wave Power (Nasdaq: WAVE) has recently obtained the final permit needed from the US Army Corps of Engineers, paving the way for the United States’ first onshore wave energy system. This groundbreaking project will be located at AltaSea’s site within the bustling Port of Los Angeles. Set to be operational by early 2025, this pilot initiative marks a significant milestone in American renewable energy development.

The permit was granted under Nationwide Permit 52, which is specifically designed for water-based renewable energy pilot projects. It will allow the installation of eight innovative wave energy floaters along the existing structure of Municipal Pier One. These installations are coupled with an energy conversion system encased in two 20-foot shipping containers already stationed at the site.

Eco Wave Power’s technology captures the kinetic energy generated by the natural ebb and flow of ocean waves. This movement activates hydraulic pistons connected to the floaters, pushing biodegradable hydraulic fluid to land-based accumulators. The accumulated pressure then drives a hydraulic motor and a generator, converting mechanical power into electricity which feeds into the grid through an inverter. The system operates in a circular manner, reusing the hydraulic fluid to minimize environmental impact.

This project is not just a technological endeavor but also a collaborative one. In April 2024, Eco Wave Power announced a partnership with global energy giant Shell to execute this project, following the successful acquisition of the necessary permit.

Inna Braverman, CEO of Eco Wave Power, expressed excitement about the project’s progress, highlighting its significance in the broader context of renewable energy advancement. “This project represents not only a technological breakthrough but also a crucial step in advancing the global transition to renewable energy,” she stated.

Eco Wave Power is already operating the first grid-connected wave energy system in Israel and is expanding its reach with upcoming installations in Taiwan and Portugal. The potential of wave energy is immense, with the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimating that it could power hundreds of millions of homes worldwide. The successful implementation of the Los Angeles pilot could establish wave energy as a reliable and substantial contributor to the global renewable energy mix.
