Mountain Lions Adapt to City Life in Los Angeles

A recent study reveals that mountain lions in the Los Angeles area are shifting their daily habits to steer clear of humans. These adaptable predators have become more active at night in areas with heavy human recreation, while those in quieter regions stick to their natural rhythms of dawn and dusk activity.

The research, published in Biological Conservation, monitored 22 mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains and surrounding areas between 2011 and 2018. Using GPS and accelerometer collars, scientists tracked the animals’ movements and compared them to patterns of human recreation. Griffith Park, one of L.A.’s largest green spaces, saw the highest levels of human activity, while more remote locations like the Santa Susana Mountains had far less traffic.

Male mountain lions living in areas with dense human presence and small territories were the most nocturnal. Females, on the other hand, tended to stay active during the day, possibly as a strategy to avoid males, who can pose a threat to them and their kittens.

Study co-author Seth Riley pointed out the significance of these findings, saying, “These results are really important in that they show how humans may be affecting wildlife in less obvious ways than killing them with vehicles.” He also highlighted the remarkable adaptability of these big cats, noting that their ability to adjust allows them to survive in one of the world’s largest urban areas.

However, researchers stressed that coexistence requires effort from both sides. People should be mindful of mountain lions, especially during dawn and dusk, and take precautions like driving carefully at night. Lead author Ellie Bolas expressed optimism about the future, saying, “Coexistence is happening, and it’s in large part because of what mountain lions are doing.”
