As world leaders gather for the United Nations General Assembly in New York, high-profile figures like Bette Midler and Lupita Nyong’o are making their voices heard on a crucial issue: plastic pollution. Alongside athletes, activists, and concerned citizens from around the world, they are urging global leaders to take bold steps to reduce plastic production and end the use of single-use plastics.
These celebrities and advocates have signed an open letter pushing for world leaders to back an ambitious Global Plastics Treaty. With 80% of people supporting significant cuts to plastic production, according to a Greenpeace International poll, there is widespread public demand for change. The letter emphasizes that while individual actions like recycling and beach cleanups are helpful, they are not enough to address the systemic issues driving plastic Pollution. The real solution, they argue, lies in cutting back plastic production at its source.
The upcoming UN negotiations for the Global Plastics Treaty, scheduled for November 25 to December 1, 2024, in Busan, South Korea, offer a critical opportunity for decisive action. Greenpeace has been vocal in calling for a 75% reduction in global plastic production by 2040, a move that would help protect biodiversity and combat Climate change. Since the vast majority of plastic is made from fossil fuels, unchecked plastic production contributes significantly to Global warming.
Olympic gold medalist Sharon van Rouwendaal, who dedicated her recent victory to her late dog, challenged politicians to be inspired by the urgency of the climate crisis. Meanwhile, Greenpeace USA’s Graham Forbes stressed that world leaders must resist the influence of the fossil fuel industry and act in the best interest of the planet and its people.
