Fairs are usually thought of as fun, family activities where you can play games, eat some cotton candy, ride the Ferris wheel, and maybe even win a competition. While they may seem like a harmless, wholesome way to spend your weekend, fairs often include some component of animal exploitation

Harrow Fair takes place every year in Essex, Ontario. It involves classic fair activities, such as rides, competitions, and live entertainment. Unfortunately, there are many fair activities that involve the ill-treatment of animals. Not only do they hold a 4-H auction, but there is also an even called Pigeon Rolling, or Parlour Tumblers.

In Pigeon Rolling competitions, handlers roll a pigeon across the field and whoever has the pigeon that rolls the farthest wins a prize. While organizers claim that the activity that shows off what the birds do naturally, the video shows that participants also use force rather than just letting the pigeons roll on their own. Furthermore, most tumbler pigeons only roll every once in a while and then are able to gain control to fly away. However, these tumbler pigeons are selectively inbred to produce genetic mutations that cause them to roll continuously. Such pigeons, are also referred to as “rollers,” and are incapable of flying, which is the natural response to fear for most birds. Thus, these birds are subjected to both physical and mental trauma.
