With Summer starting and the Fourth of July coming up, it’s important to discuss the dangers of illegal fireworks. Even legal firework shows can present their own dangers, but when an event is planned ahead of time, people in the area can prepare for what’s to come. However, illegal fireworks which are often used by people randomly in residential areas are harmful to children, pets, people with PTSD, and the elderly.
For those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), “explosions and noisy displays can raise anxiety levels and bring back traumatic memories of gunfire, bomb detonations and terrifying conditions.” Similarly, they can be terrifying for senior people with dementia because the loud sounds create confusion and fear. Children are also affected. Not to mention, they can start fires as most people who handle them illegally are not professionally equipped to do so.
Pets, especially dogs, are severely harmed by fireworks. The terrifying loud, explosion-type sounds can cause dogs to run away. Some get lost, some die, they can be struck by cars and more.
The Coalition for a Fireworks Free LA wants to protect people and dogs from these harmful effects. Therefore, they’ve created this petition that will go to Mayor Garcetti and District Attorney Mike Feuer asking for a change in the enforcement protocols regarding fireworks.
They’ve created a well-thought-out list with the many ways that the enforcement protocols could be changed to ensure safety. It includes an increase in fins, misdemeanor arrests, blocking the shipment of fireworks, and more. Sign this petition if you Support these changes. If Los Angeles makes changes like this for the safety of people and pets, then other cities might follow suit.
