It’s horrible to hear about animal abuse cases or read the ways humans are endangering many species. Fortunately, there are things we can do to speak for them. One of the ways we can help and lend our voices to good causes is by signing petitions. Such petitions are sent to people in powerful positions that can make a change, especially when they see just how many people stand behind the cause. We can demand change, justice, and stop tragedies by speaking up and doing our part.

There are horrifying things happening around the world every week like extinction, hunting, exploitation, and cruelty. If you are looking for a way to help animals, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including ending the trafficking of endangered animals, freeing captive elephants, and saving wildlife from trophy hunters.

We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.

There are more than 560 National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) in the United States. They were created to give our native flora and fauna a space to live and prosper. The Trump administration has decided to open 30 of our crucial NWRs up to expanded hunting, meaning that the animals that once lived in relative protection are now walking around with bullseyes on their heads. In April 2020, they announced that they’re planning on opening up more than 100 refuges and fish hatcheries for hunting — effectively turning them into killing grounds. Sign this petition to let the new Secretary of the Interior know that we want our refuges to be just that.

2. Stop Dog and Cat Meat Festivals and Slaughter Houses

Over 10,000 dogs are skinned, boiled, burnt and dismembered alive in slaughter houses for the yearly dog meat festivals in China, Korea, Cambodia, Vietnam, Phillipines, Thailand and Indonesia. This petition was created by Canadian citizens asking their prime minister not to stand by and take action. Sign this petition if you agree and want to put an end to these cruel festivals.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is in the final stages of implementing a plan that is intended to decimate cougar populations in Colorado. The West Slope Mountain Lion Management Plan will allow hunters to kill 664 cougars this coming winter, up from 541 killed last winter. Sign this petition to let Colorado Parks and Wildlife know that most Coloradans want a healthy cougar population and to protect female cougars from over hunting!

Daily Mail recently reported: “Around 4000 wild brumbies will be killed or rehomed while pigs, goats and deer will be shot from helicopters.” Horse removal start this month, June 2020 and will continue throughout the year. Sign this petition calling on David Littleproud MP, Australian Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management; and Sussan Ley MP, Australian Minister for the Environment; to do whatever it takes to ensure a humane method of controlling the population of wild horses is used.

Reports have found that at least 5,035 live wild animals were exported from South Africa to China from 2016 to 2019. There isn’t enough regulation and this is only fueling the international wildlife trade. Sign this petition calling on Barbara Creecy, South Africa’s Minister of Environment; and Nkhensani Kubayi-Ngubane, South Africa’s Minister of Tourism; to take immediate action in their government to put a stop to this heinous industry, as well as calling for severe punishments for animal traffickers.

6. Urge Leading Sunscreen Brand, Coppertone, to Make Their Products Reef-Safe

Coral reefs are underwater ecosystems. Rising sea temperatures are bleaching coral reefs, but sunscreen also plays a role. Oxybenzone and ingredient often used in sunscreen becomes more toxic when exposed to sunlight and contributes to the bleaching of coral reefs, ruining their DNA and damaging them. Coppertone has been a leading sunscreen brand for over 70 years. If they made a change and made their sunscreens reef-safe, other companies would follow suit. If you agree, sign this petition telling Bayer (Coppertone’s parent company) to change Coppertone’s ingredients and go reef-safe before it’s too late.

7. Ask Thai Government to Aid Starving Elephants

Source: Starving Elephants in Thailand: We Demand Thai Government to Send Urgent Aid

Since the coronavirus hit, all the tourists have disappeared. With more than 90 camps in northern Thailand, around 1000 elephants are in desperate need of support. There is no money to feed them and they are chained up for almost 24 hours every day on short leads. The problem is being exacerbated by wildfires started by farmers to burning and clear land leaving less and less vegetation to feed them. Sign this petition asking the Thai government to step in immediately with funds and a rescue strategy to save these magnificent animals.

Mo Mo the elephant recently turned 63 years old, which is quite a feat for an elephant raised in captivity. She has spent the last 56 years of her life in captivity, performing with the other elephants for zoo visitors. Instead of releasing 62 birds to celebrate Mo Mo’s birthday, the Yangon Zoological Gardens should have released Mo Mo. It is a miracle that she has managed to survive all these years in captivity; let’s give her the rest and respite she deserves. Sign this petition demanding her freedom!

9. Ask Alberta to Free Orphaned Grizzlies!

This petition asks Alberta Environment and Parks to allow the three orphaned Crows Nest Pass Grizzly bear Cubs to a wildlife rehabilitation centre, rather than life in a zoo. Currently they are housed at Calgary Zoo, but Calgary Zoo wants to transfer them to another zoo. If they are not release able, send them to a huge sanctuary for rescued captive wildlife that is off limits to the public. Please keep these bears out of the zoo animal and entertainment trade. Sign this petition to help save the bears!

Botswana is home to about 1/3 of Africa’s precious elephants, numbering around 160,000. But now they want to allow them to be slaughtered for profit. “Botswana will allow foreign hunters to shoot 202 of its 272-elephant quota for the year, as well as to export the trophies,” reported EcoWatch. Sign this petition to ask Tshekedi Khama – Botswana’s Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism – to introduce legislation that would stop his nation’s elephants from being hunted!
