Funda Bayrı, a 73-year-old animal rights activist and chair of the Aegean Animal rights Federation, has been arrested by a Turkish court for sharing images of individuals violating animal rights on her personal social media account. This arrest highlights the challenges faced by Animal rights defenders in a legal system grappling with the complexities of protecting animal welfare and preserving personal data.
On August 1, an İzmir court ordered the arrest of Funda Bayrı on charges of “obtaining or disseminating personal data.” This unexpected move has sent shockwaves through the Animal rights community, sparking concerns about the implications for advocacy and activism in Turkey. Bayrı has received a sentence of three years and four months in prison as a result of these charges.
According to her lawyer, the arrest was partially triggered by previously finalized convictions from other cases. Despite their objections to the charges, Bayrı’s imprisonment appears inevitable, casting a spotlight on the limitations of existing legal protections for both Animal rights defenders and the animals they strive to safeguard.
Bayrı’s case underscores the inadequacy of current laws in Turkey to shield animal rights advocates and animals alike. Although a groundbreaking step was taken in 2021 when the Turkish parliament passed legislation designating animals as “living beings” and criminalizing animal abuse with sentences ranging from six months to four years, the scope of the law remains insufficient. This is due to the prevalent practice of deferring sentences of less than two years, offenders are allowed to escape imprisonment for heinous acts against animals.
