At the 2024 UBCM Convention, municipal leaders voted to Support Resolution NR54, urging the British Columbia government to implement a provincewide ban on glue traps. These traps, designed with a sticky adhesive, often capture small animals, leading to prolonged suffering and death as they struggle to escape.
The resolution gained traction thanks to collaboration among PETA, the British Columbia SPCA, and local activists, including Councillors Teale Phelps Bondaroff and John Rogers. This coalition garnered Support from numerous animal advocacy groups, wildlife rehabilitators, and veterinary professionals across the province. PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman highlighted the cruel fate of animals ensnared by these traps, emphasizing the urgency for the public to advocate for legislative change.
Councillor Bondaroff expressed gratitude to the advocates who helped bring attention to this issue, noting that glue traps result in horrific suffering for both targeted and non-targeted animals alike. The traps not only fail to provide a sustainable solution but also exacerbate wildlife issues, as more animals will continue to encroach on areas where food sources are readily available.
