In a shocking revelation, nearly 250 rodents, initially meant for adoption, were instead fed to snakes and reptiles, according to a joint probe by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona and the San Diego Humane Society. The distressing discovery comes after a contentious back-and-forth between the two organizations, raising questions about the fate of the transferred animals.

The saga unfolded in August when the Humane Society of Southern Arizona received a transfer of 323 animals from its San Diego-based counterpart. On the same day of their arrival in Tucson, approximately 250 of these small animals were handed over to Colten Jones in Apache Junction, as detailed in the initial report.
While about 60 animals were eventually returned by Jones to the humane society, concerns arose among activists in both San Diego and Tucson about the fate of the remaining 250 small animals still in Jones’ possession. The ensuing pressure from activists prompted both organizations to delve into the matter, leading to the termination of the Humane Society of Southern Arizona’s CEO Steve Farley, and the resignation of Christian Gonzalez, its chief programs officer.
In response to the public outcry, both agencies decided to hire a third party to conduct an investigation, which unveiled a troubling text message from Jones. The message indicated his request for assistance in processing a large number of Guinea pigs and rabbits for reptile feed a day after receiving them. The investigation further confirmed Jones as the operator of The Fertile Turtle, a reptile breeding company known for selling both live and frozen animals for reptile consumption.
The joint news release stated that legal action would be pursued by both organizations, though the specific grounds for such action were not explicitly mentioned. The agencies expressed deep sorrow for the animals and acknowledged the concerns of the community. They encouraged anyone with relevant information to contact the Tucson Police Department, referencing case #P2311020076.
As the investigation continues, a final report is expected in December, shedding more light on the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident.
