In Billings, Montana, 75 dogs, cats, and kittens were engulfed in toxic smoke after the FBI allegedly burned confiscated meth in the same building as a local animal shelter. The fumes filled the facility, leaving workers and animals gasping for air. Shelter staff rushed to save the animals, carrying them through clouds of chemical smoke — but many, including four litters of kittens, are still recovering from respiratory and eye damage.
The FBI, an agency meant to protect communities, must take responsibility. Workers suffered smoke inhalation, with some requiring hours of hyperbaric oxygen treatment. This reckless act endangered both people and animals — those who were innocent victims of federal negligence. The Bureau must compensate the affected staff and animals and commit to never burning controlled substances in such unsafe conditions again.
