At Marston Middle School in Clairemont, 18 students worked on a unique set of projects this spring, designing accessibility items for animals and a local blind student. This initiative was part of an inaugural program by the county Office of Education’s Educational Technology department, aiming to bring innovative learning experiences to San Diego schools.

The students created various items, including a braille-inscribed video game controller for Diego, a blind student, and a splint for animals with injured legs. These designs came to life using 3D printing technology.

Carrie Lane, the project specialist, emphasized the real-world impact of the program, stating, “We had real students and real animals that needed solutions.” The students designed 20 items, including braille gaming controllers, a football with bells for Diego, and various tools for animals at the Living Coast Discovery Center and San Diego Humane Society.

Eighth-graders Addie Bowe and Skye Carmody designed habitats and enrichment tools for reptiles, reflecting their love for these creatures. The program, part of the school’s Exploration Advisory course, encouraged students to research and design based on specific needs, fostering creativity and problem-solving skills. Lane initially introduced the concept at the Linda Vista Innovation Center and later brought the three-week program to Marston. The collaboration with local organizations ensured the designs addressed real needs, benefiting both students and animals.

Veterinarian Jonathan Chapman and animal care manager Aiyana Reissman praised the initiative, noting the practical benefits for animals in shelters and rehabilitation. The success of the program has Lane hopeful about expanding it to other schools, helping students explore potential career paths.
