Two lion brothers achieved a record-breaking swim across the predator-filled Kazinga Channel in Uganda. This extraordinary event was documented by a team led by Dr. Alexander Braczkowski from Griffith University, using high-definition heat detection cameras on drones.

The two lions, Jacob and his brother Tibu, embarked on their perilous journey at night. After two unsuccessful attempts, they successfully swam approximately 1.5 kilometers to reach the other side of the channel. Jacob, a ten-year-old lion and local icon, has endured numerous life-threatening incidents, including losing one of his hind legs to a poacher’s snare. Dr. Braczkowski described Jacob as “a cat with nine lives,” highlighting his resilience after surviving attacks by a buffalo, family poisoning, and multiple poaching attempts.
The research team noted that the lion population in the park has significantly declined, halving in the past five years due to human-caused catastrophes such as poisoning and electrocution. This decline has led to a skewed gender ratio, with two males for every female, prompting Jacob and Tibu to risk the dangerous swim in search of lionesses.
Dr. Braczkowski expressed his sorrow over the pressures created by human activities that force these animals into such extreme measures. His team, including South African filmmaker Luke Ochse and field coordinators Bosco Atukwatse from Uganda and Orin Cornille from Belgium, worked alongside scientists from Griffith University and Northern Arizona University to document this incredible journey.
The competition for lionesses is fierce in the park, and Jacob and Tibu likely made the risky swim after losing a fight for female affection. The presence of humans deterred them from using a small connecting bridge, compelling them to brave the waters of the Kazinga Channel instead.
