The Marrakech International Film Festival, running from November 29 to December 7, has become a focal point for protests against the inhumane treatment of stray dogs in Morocco. Activists have called on attending celebrities, including Patricia Arquette, Tim Burton, and David Cronenberg, to speak out about the brutal killings of street dogs allegedly carried out to “clean up” the city ahead of high-profile events.
According to the International Animal Coalition, dogs are being rounded up, beaten, poisoned, or shot in public, often in view of children. Debbie Wilson of the International Animal Coalition explained, “Whenever a big event is in town the dog catchers go out and brutally slaughter the area’s dogs. This is terrifying, painful and inhumane for the dogs, but also deeply traumatic for the local population including young children who witness the spectacle night and day.”
Actor and animal advocate Peter Egan condemned the killings, calling them both cruel and ineffective. “The only way to do this effectively and humanely is spay/neuter, vaccinate and return the dogs to their communities. What they are doing now does not stop the spread of rabies,” he stated, urging his fellow actors to use their platforms to challenge the Moroccan authorities’ practices.
Gruesome footage released by the International Animal Coalition reveals the violent methods used against these animals, including strychnine poisoning and physical abuse. Protests have erupted across Morocco, with peaceful demonstrations in Marrakech and other cities calling for systemic change.
Activists argue that these mass killings, often tied to events like the African Cup of Nations and Morocco’s 2030 FIFA World Cup bid, tarnish the country’s image.
