Flaco the Owl’s Conditions were Fatal Before Colliding with Building

Flaco, the Eurasian eagle owl, captured the hearts of New Yorkers with his daring escapades and resilient spirit. However, his story took a tragic turn as recent revelations from a postmortem conducted by zoo officials shed light on the multiple challenges he faced during his brief but eventful life.

Flaco’s journey into the limelight began when he escaped from captivity in February 2023, after vandals breached his enclosure at the Central Park Zoo. From that moment on, he became a symbol of freedom, soaring through New York City, a place not typically associated with wildlife of his kind.

However, his freedom came with a price. The postmortem revealed a series of underlying health issues that would have significantly compromised his chances of survival, even without the fatal collision with a building that claimed his life. Flaco had been weakened by rat poison, a pigeon virus, and traces of DDE, a byproduct of the infamous pesticide DDT, which still lingers in the environment despite being banned decades ago.

The necropsy unveiled the extent of Flaco‘s suffering, with severe tissue damage and inflammation in vital organs attributed to the viral infection he contracted from consuming infected feral pigeons. Despite his valiant efforts to thrive in an urban environment teeming with challenges, Flaco’s health ultimately deteriorated under the weight of these multiple stressors.

The Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages zoos across New York City, emphasized the perils faced by wild birds, particularly in urban settings like New York. Flaco’s demise serves as a poignant reminder of the complex interplay between infectious diseases, environmental toxins, and human activities that threaten wildlife.

Flaco’s untimely death spread through New York, prompting an outpouring of grief from residents who had followed his exploits with admiration. Memorials adorned with flowers and candles sprung up across the city, a showing of the profound impact he had on those who crossed paths with him, albeit fleetingly.
