University Health System implemented the “Paws Up” pet therapy program to provide comfort and Support to patients in the hospital. Using shelter animals, the therapy program has made huge improvements to the mental health and wellness of both patients and the animals that come to help them. One little girl, 4-year-old Raven, is seen on her hospital bed cuddling with rescue cat Zayne. Monica Gibson, a University Health System employee, attests to the program saying that you can “see their eyes light up when they see the animals”.

Inspire Equine Therapy Program in Clearwater Florida is helping people with mental health issues. Starting during the pandemic, the horses have been used as an alternative to traditional talk therapy. With anxiety rates skyrocketing from 7% in 2019 to 30% in 2020, the power of horses became apparent. The horses help with anxiety, PTSD, and those with disabilities.

Jocelyn Ryan is like many other people — she is afraid of the dentist. Going to the dentist gives her severe anxiety and fear in the days leading up to her appointment and the day of her appointment. But, one dentist in New York City, Dr. Carlos Huerta, has employed a new kind of program to help those suffering from dentist anxiety: a therapy dog. During the procedure, Luna, the office’s therapy dog, sits with patients to keep them calm. Jocelyn said it made her visit a lot easier.

Juanita Mengel is missing a leg and so is her cat Lola-Pearl. Together, they spread happiness and comfort as one of only 200 registered cat therapy teams in the United States through the non-profit organization Pet Partners. They go to nursing homes, schools, and hospitals to talk about limb differences, help others through tough times, and Support anyone in need!

In Edgewood Kentucky, a local woman registered the first therapy guinea pig in the Tri-State to help bring holiday cheer to patients at Saint Elizabeth Healthcare. Rapunzel is only small, but she is making a huge difference in the lives of patients. She’s one of only 25 guinea pigs in the United States certified for therapy.
